How Website Downtime Affects SEO and Search Rankings

When your website goes down, the immediate cost is clear: visitors can't access your content, leads are lost, and revenue stops. But there's a longer-term cost that many website owners overlook — the impact on your SEO and search rankings.

Search engines care deeply about page availability. A site that's frequently down or consistently slow will, over time, lose ranking power. Here's how downtime affects SEO and what you can do to protect your rankings.

How Google Handles Website Downtime

Google's crawlers (Googlebot) visit your website regularly to index your content. When they encounter downtime, their response depends on how long and how often your site is unavailable.

Brief Outages (Minutes to Hours)

For short outages, Google is relatively forgiving. If Googlebot visits your site during a brief outage and receives a 500 Server Error, it won't immediately deindex your pages. Google understands that temporary server errors happen.

According to Google's documentation, a single 500 error during a crawl attempt causes Googlebot to retry after a short delay. If the retry succeeds, no ranking impact occurs.

Extended Outages (Hours to Days)

If your site is down for an extended period — several hours or longer — and Googlebot repeatedly encounters 500 errors, Google may:

  • Reduce crawl frequency for your domain
  • Temporarily deindex pages that consistently return errors
  • Lower rankings for pages that appear unreliable

Extended outages are a genuine SEO risk. The longer the outage and the more frequently Googlebot visits (which depends on your domain authority and content freshness requirements), the greater the potential impact.

The 503 vs. 500 Distinction

The specific HTTP status code matters:

  • 503 Service Unavailable — the correct status code to return during planned maintenance. This tells Googlebot "we're temporarily down, please come back." Combined with a Retry-After header, this signals intentional maintenance and has minimal SEO impact.
  • 500 Internal Server Error — returned during unexpected failures. Repeated 500s signal reliability problems to Google.

Downtime and Core Web Vitals

Google's Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, FID/INP) are ranking signals collected from real user data via the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX). These signals are collected from users who successfully loaded your page.

Downtime affects Core Web Vitals indirectly:

  • Users who hit your site during partial outages (slow responses, timeouts) may have worse LCP and CLS scores
  • Consistently slow TTFB (what is time to first byte?) affects LCP, which is a direct ranking factor
  • Sites that are frequently partially down may have fewer successful page loads to average into CrUX data, potentially skewing CWV scores

Crawl Budget Implications

High-authority sites with large numbers of pages have a "crawl budget" — a limit on how much of your site Googlebot will crawl in a given period. Repeated failures waste crawl budget, leaving important pages uncrawled and unindexed.

For smaller sites, crawl budget is less of a concern. But for content-heavy sites with thousands of pages, frequent downtime can directly slow down your indexing velocity.

SEO Impact of Domain Availability

If your domain itself becomes unavailable — due to domain expiry, DNS misconfiguration, or a security block — Google treats this differently from a server error. A domain that returns NXDOMAIN (domain not found) will be deindexed if the unavailability is prolonged.

Domain expiry monitoring directly protects SEO by ensuring your domain never lapses. An expired domain is one of the fastest ways to lose your search rankings, often with lasting consequences even after the domain is restored.

SSL and SEO

Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014. More importantly, Chrome now labels HTTP sites as "Not Secure," which increases bounce rates (a negative user signal). An expired SSL certificate takes this further — it blocks users entirely, dramatically increasing bounce rate and reducing crawl success.

1. Monitor Uptime

The most direct action: set up website uptime monitoring so you know about outages within seconds, not hours. Faster response means shorter outages, which means less SEO impact.

Always return a proper 503 with Retry-After header during intentional maintenance windows. This signals to Googlebot that downtime is temporary and expected.

3. Monitor Domain and SSL Expiry

Domain expiry monitoring and SSL certificate monitoring prevent two of the most severe and avoidable causes of search ranking damage.

4. Track Your Uptime History

Use your monitoring tool's reporting to track uptime percentages over time. If you're below 99.5% monthly uptime, you should investigate the cause — repeated downtime has cumulative SEO effects.

5. Check Google Search Console

After a significant outage, check Google Search Console for:

  • Crawl errors (Coverage report)
  • Server error spikes (Index Coverage issues)
  • Any manual actions triggered by availability issues
